If I am initially treated by an insurance company doctor, do I have a right to see my own doctor at some point?

The workers’ compensation system allows an injured worker the ability to see a doctor of his or her choice once. It’s known as an independent medical examination. The independent medical examination is governed by strict rules. Unfortunately, the injured worker must pay for this independent medical examination. It’s for this reason that I suggest you consult an attorney before choosing an independent medical examination because oftentimes that attorney can obtain an advance from the insurance company in order for you to obtain that IME.
